Filing complaint against collection agency?

I am trying to figure out how I can file a complaint against a collection agency. I do not know the name of the company, just the phone numbers and who sent the case to them. I am based out of Kentucky.

I wrote a company check for insurance but the day after I found that a check I had deposited had bounced. I called my insurance agent and told him about it. Long story short, our policy was canceled and the insurance company continued to try to cash the check (even though it was for a LOT more than we owed them).

We got a call from a "lawyer" threatening to sue us for the bad check (and that it was a felony charge). He was so rude to us on the phone that I hung up on him. A few days later someone else called representing themselves as working for the insurance company.

We talked with this person over a period of two months, telling him that our records did not match what they (the insurance company) said we owed. We talked a lot about not getting requested information from our agent, and about many things of confidential and sensitive business matters.

A few days ago I got a call from another "lawyer". After talking with him for about 10 minutes I started to get suspicious. He was vague on any points I wished to address and kept asking us to pay some money as "a show of good faith".

LONG story short, I noticed that both the "insurance" guy and both of the "lawyers" had similiar numbers, except for the last three digits (ie. 555-990-1xxx) which was not plausible.

During the conversations with the "insurance" guy he said that if we paid a certain amount he would have no problems in "renewing your insurance policy" and "after so many years we value your business and don't wish to lose it".

Basically, for two months we thought we were dealing with the insurance company and their lawyers. Now it turns out it was a collection agency. No lawyers. No one who could "renew" our commercial insurance.

How can I make a complaint against this company when I find out their name? Can I sue them over these illegal methods? They just wasted months of our time that we could have been dealing with the REAL insurance company and relieving our issues with them.

Any advice would be appreciated.
