Why Chat-Joint Account Follow Up

In my ignorant youth, I opened a joint account (with my boyfriend at the time) with Macy's in 1994. Apparently, my irresponsible boyfriend didn't pay the bills and never told me. I think the card was closed out as a bad debt in 1996. A couple of years later, I tried to help him pay off the debt, and I think that Macy's allowed him to reactivate the card. At this time, I was unaware of this. Again, he fails to pay his bills and I am stuck. I don't want to pay the new charged off debt, but its on my credit account. Is there anything that I can do to clear my name? I haven't been involved with this man for a number of years, but this debt is still on my report. The account was opened in New York, but my boyfriend moved to Maryland, and thats where it was charged off. I do not live in either states.
