When was the judgment filed?
When did your "1996" debt default?
Whose $$ was in the joint account? Yours or the relative?
Whose name and ss# were primary on the account?

I do not think ANY advise you can get here can help you, as I do not believe you have fully explored the idea of not having to pay at ALL. It is POSSIBLE that you could appeal the judgment and/or have the garnished funds restored.

There is a LI, NY lawyer's name and phone # posted at the bottom of the NY page on my website. He may be able to help.
