Does paying less than minimum prevent late payments?

I heard that if you pay something even if less than the minimum amount that they can't report you as late. Is that true? I have a collection account that was taken off my account and sold and the new account is in the first 30 days and hasn't showed up on my credit report. If I make a nominal payment, will it keep them from being put back on my report?
