ID theft records on credit report ?

i have lots of credit cards charged off on my credit report. i'm applying for a new job and the employer asks for a background credit check. Can i tell them my bad credit report were caused by ID thefts? In a real ID theft case, will the credit report shows anything regarding to ID theft?
