To BK or not to BK

Once again, I sincerely appreciate all the advice and guidance from all the posters on this forum...

I would like to know, before I hire a lawyer, is it seemingly worth trying to salvage my credit by filing for BK if my total debt is around $10,000 or less. If I know that I can most likely pay off all my debts in the next few months by settling if I were to, say, rob a bank, or stumble across Britney Spears in Vegas and marry her, would this be less damaging to my future credit?
