You are not alone, good sir/madam. Alleged nonprofit debt counselors who "deal with thousands of creditors" and "stop the collection calls" and carpet-bomb the airwaves with sappy ads and paid actors who enthuse "they saved my life" are a current fashionable scam. Ameridebt WAS the biggest and worst (and with the sappiest ads) until a number of state attorneys general and the FTC stepped on them.

DO NOT repeat DO NOT let them get away with this. They lied to you, you reasonably relied on their representations, you let them have your money to pass along, and they just kept it. What's wrong with this picture?

If you are in NC I might could help you sue them for fraud and triple damages and attorney fees, but wherever you are, go NOW to the police and tell them all about it, file complaints with your state AG and the FTC and anyone else you can think of, post on www.ripoffreport.com, and generally make them sorry that they ever heard of you. And find a lawyer who loves to put litter in its place, and sue the living stink out of them before they fold up and the executives flee to the Cayman Islands with everybody's money.
