Recently received a phone call from a collection agency stating that I owed $ from a credit card account that payment ceased on in 1991. They said that they would settle for 1/2 the debt if I paid within 30 days or I could make payments on the full amount. I dont remember even having the account. I think maybe my exhusband opened it as it was his last name on the account.I went back to my madien name after my divorce.Isnt their a statue of limitations on credit cards debts, Any thoughts on how to handle this? My divorce has been final for a long time so if my ex husband did open this account then its really too late for me to do anything about it as we thought we had all our debts settled at the time of the divorce. I have no current obbligations and nothing is on my credit report. Then a freind of mine told me that a colection agency put a freeze on her checking account for an old debt ( and the bank charged her a huge fee and she bounced all her checks. The collection agency never contacted her before they did it either.
