You are clearly beyond the statute of limitations for New York, so you legally do not have to pay even if you signed for the card. Call the court clerks where you live to see if a judgment has been entered against you, but my guess is that they didn't get a judgment. If they did, they wouldn't be asking for money and they'd have a tradeline entered in your credit report.
