Exemptions for Bankruptcy vary widely by state and in some states Federal Exemptions are also available. The 2K in the bank will depend on your available exemptions.

In general though, cash in the bank of more than a few hundred at the time you file is a BAD idea. Use the money for NECESSITIES and keep all receipts. Just have that balance very low on the day you file for bankruptcy as the Trustee will want to see your bank statements.
