I'm afraid both MBNA and Amex have a reputation for being hard-noses. If they don't accept an 80% offer and deletion, I'm afraid there's probably little chance of a settlement for less than the full amount they are asking for.

By the way, it's been said that Amex NEVER forgets. No matter how many years may pass, if you don't pay them back in full you will never be approved for another Amex card. Although, I'm sure that's the last thing on your mind at present. But I think it illustrates how unyielding they can be.
