Some financial aid, such as Pell Grants, are based on family income. So, in a kind of backward way, it may actually help that you have some credit problems. Scholarships are based on the student's profile- you and your child should start researching possible scholarships. Not all are need based or grade based. Some only require a matching last name, or living in a certain city. Many scholarships go unclaimed, so get out there and apply for everything you can find. Good luck
