Equifax is incredibly inaccurate, at least in my experience. Check the other two majors, TransUnion and Experian. It may be there, or he may have been scamming you with an out of statute debt. You need to check the SOL for your state. See Why Chat's site, Newcomers link is in the post down toward the bottom posts. The entries have to be removed from your credit report after seven years, but that has no relationship with the SOL for lawsuits. It's usually shorter for lawsuits. But don't pay them crap. An oral promise to pay a debt to a CA doesn't count for poo. The only thing binding on you is a written contract between you and the CA, and you can't sign over the phone. ;-) Find out if the debt is SOL, and if it is, send them Why Chat's SOL letter.
