I used to live in NYC and I can share these tips for apartment/house hunting. All should still work except for paying the super to give you a rent controlled apt. Shop for neighborhoods first. Figure out where you would like to live, then drive around and look for available housing. I found lots of places by just looking- one was not even vacant yet. I saw the previous tenant moving out, got the landlord's name, and then called. Also, you will find a better place because the people who judge you by your credit history are not necessarily the best landlords. I found a great landlord because I needed someone that would take my pets. Don't give up. Just change your search tactics. ALso, network - if you know anyone there, let them know that you are looking for housing.
