Thanks for the comments. But it sounds like if I negotiate "payment plans" myself with the creditors, I will still be paying the entire principal, which is what I'm trying to avoid. I know you can negotiate lump-sum settlements yourself as well, but if you have a good referral for a negotiator (which I do), it does seem like this might help those who are not confident in their own negotiating skills...seems like the problem with debt negotiation companies is mainly when people don't check the companies out thoroughly before they contract them, no?
