Yes, stalling for time and getting an attorney changes altogether the dynamics of the "game" these jokers play. But you have to make an appearance in order to make or file your motion, and (stupidly) you'll have to pay the appearance fee or request to file as an indigent. Not showing up at the court on the date and time listed on your summons would be the *worst* possible thing you could do.

But any resistance at all will give you more leverage. It depends on how much they have in documentation as proof, and how much money they've claimed you owe, as to whether they'll go away or settle for less.

And you are correct about settling setting off a feeding frenzy. If you can settle to have the tradeline deleted from your report, no one may notice. But if they see a "paid" status on your report, the other hounds will probably come after you.

If you can afford an attorney, or are eligible for legal aid, by all means get help there. Otherwise, you may have to delay as much as you can to give you time to regroup and plan a method of attack...be it on the grounds of proof of every penny owed, proof that they have the right to legally collect, etc..
