State Taxes - Help!!

I received a letter from the Illinois Dept. of Revenue. They say I owe $1500 state taxes from 1997! With interest they are asking for over $5,000!

I know I don't owe this tax because withholdings were taken out of my paycheck by a company I worked for in IL for nearly 5 years. Problem is that I don't have any of my records for this far back, and the company I worked for went bankrupt a couple years ago.

The letter says that they can place a levy on me without notice. It references the IL tax act, and also the IL Comptrollers Act, but lists no federal laws that say they have any authority in Texas.

Isn't there some sort of SOL for this?

Can they really place a levy on me in TX?

I've always paid my taxes and I'm pretty Ticked off that they're sending this now and asking for so much interest.

I don't really want to get a lawyer, but do I really have any other choice?

If anyone can help out with some useful information I'd really appreciate it.
