Hi, My head is still spinning from opening a letter I received today from a collection agency. Several things: (1) the letter purported to be the second collection letter, but it's the first i've seen, (2) the letter claims to be attempting to collect a debt from GTE wireless, my cell phone company from 5 years ago (3) the letter offered NO VERIFICATION of the supposed debt or the original account, just who the original creditor was, GTE wireless. It took me a little bit to remeber, but from what I can recall, Cingular bought out GTE wireless. I soon thereafter chose to change cell phone companies, paid by bill off to cingular (becuase I was getting my bills from them) and canceled my phone. I don't remember how much later, but I do remeber that I was contacted by either GTE or a collection agency by letter about a delinquincy. I called and called, and explained that I had paid the bill, and they finally agreed that the bill had been paid. I even got the name of the person I spoke with on the phone. Years passed and I didn't hear a thing - until today. In the past 5 years, I've moved across country, changed banks, and started school again. I'm petrified this will keep me from getting my student loans. I no longer have any paperwork from this scenario becuase it has been 5 freaking years. The letter today stated that the collection agency had just acquired the account. This smacks of unconscionability. But I don't know what to do, and primarily, I'm not in the position to really dispute this since I have no records, my original creditor has been out of business for 5 years, and I primarily need my student loans. What if I pay and they still report this? The collection agency is AFNI located in IL. Please, please help. I'll forever be grateful.
