They could have been assigned to collect the debt by the original creditor, or they could have bought the debt.
You need to be looking at defenses. Possible SOL, you can ask for validation, make them prove that they have the legal right to collect this debt in your state, make them prove that the added interest is legal in your state. Make they prove every penny. What state are you in and when was the last time you paid the original creditor before this debt became deliquent.
My advice is not to talk to these people on the phone. They will threaten you and harass you, and most of it will be blowing smoke. Not saying they won't sue, but for them to actually sue, they usually need to know something about your assets. What they can take if they get a judgement. Bank accounts, property. Then you have your exemptions. (what they can't take)
ANY COMMUNICATION WITH A CA/CA ATTORNEY SHOULD BE IN WRITING/CERTIFIED RETURN RECEIPT.

If you have ever paid the creditor with your present checking account. Move your money. Go to a different bank, get account with spouse as primary if possible. Protect your bank account info. If you do pay, use a money order.
Get back to us with state and SOL info. and we'll try to help.
