Is this a credit card? student loan?

If it's for a credit card, you should be home free, since the charge-off would have had to have been in '96 and it is now obsolete.

If it was a loan that was on deferment, they can continually report derogatory info every month, until you make good with the (student) loan.

Any other type of loan would have been charged-off long ago, in '96, which would again be obsolete.

Find out what it is first. If it's a cc or car loan dispute the date of last activity ONLY. You need to call or write to do this, since online doesn't have a checkbox for that. Don't say it isn't yours', cause all they do is check to see if the name and ss# match with the OC, which they always do, and it will come back verified.
