In general, most retirement accounts are exempt,a 401 certainly, an IRA probably, a Roth possibly not.

If your bank accounts are in your name with your ss# an asset search will discover them.

IF you have a trusted family member, (not a spouse) whom you can open a joint account with, putting THEIR name and ss# first as primary, it will afford you some protection.
