Many people register many domain names for the purpose of selling them to end users. The "value" is their registration cost unless hey have a bid or contract for purchase.

Some people snap up "lapsed" registrations on existing domains in use, where the owners have neglected to re-register them. They then offer them back to the original domain registrant at a HIGH price. ( which MAY have been the cause of this site being off for several weeks)
