recieved a summon , what to do ??

I recieved a summon for my husband for a credit card for $1,700.. debt is orig. 600 .. what should we do ?>? response??? or just hope judge will dismiss?? Alameda, County CA My husband send he can settle for $500 the max.. or set-up pay-plan w/out interest.
