You said the last time you paid the account was in 2001. SOL in Rhode Island (open account) is 4 years, was the account in GOOD STANDING in 2001?
My tactic was to ignore CAs and it worked pretty well for me. Change your phone number, let the machine pick up, whatever works for you. PROTECT YOUR BANK ACCOUNT. Don't leave much cash in the bank. If you ever paid the original creditor with your current checking account, close the account, go to a different bank and open a new account. Put the 500.00 under the mattress. Don't apply for any credit, don't let them get updated info on you. Hope for the best. Out of 13 cards, only one sued me, so your chances of not being sued are actually very good. I was used very close to the SOL of 4 years. I filed bk. Good Luck
