If they made us pay rent for onbase housing, then the housing better be worth a darn. My husband is Army and we lived in Hawaii, and the military housing for Army at Schofield was crappola when we lived there. Walls were cinderblocks cement with hard flooring and the interior closets and walls were clapboard wood. Termites were big problems. Windows had louvres and there were bugs galore, and it was hard to clean. The place looked like ghettos and you were on top of your neighbors and you could hear your neighbor having sex, screaming at the kids, blow wind in the tub, Nothing was private.

On contrast to that, the Air Force down by Hickams base had REAL NICE housing compared to what we had. It is getting better for military. Some of the bases are finally upgrading their military quarters. But we always do pay for our quarters. We just never see the money. We just don't get BAQ or if your an officer, VHA (Variable Housing Allowance.
