Sorry, that wasn't much help. Legal process can be very confusing if you are not versed in the law. Even then, it is easy to make a mistake.

Some options for you:

go to your local library and check out the self help books on civil lawsuits- nolo books are excellent and many others as well. Ask the librarian for help.

These books have forms in them and show you how to answer, etc.

Go to the law library -should be one in your main courthouse, and ask them for help. Remember they can not give you advice, only direct you to the correct forms.

If you were attempting to make payments and you tell the judge what you were doing (bring copies of everything to give to the judge), it is very possible the judge will work with you to arrive at a payment plan that you can live with.

You might check out WhyChats website for California. I think JR is there and she is an excellent consumer lawyer.

Knowledge is power- read up on the process and what your options are. Then decide if you want to go it alone or get a lawyer. I have done it both ways, and believe me, I will always recomend legal help. They can negotiate better deals - plus they are not emotionally involved- so they can play hardball with the other side.

The lawyer who sued you is counting on you to default and give him/her an easy win. So, show up in court - if you owe the debt, at least you can negotiate a better deal if you don't default.
