Did I mess up?

I recieved a notice to pay a debt that I believe is over 8 years old. I sent out a letter asking that the debt be "verified" ---not "VALIDATED" --not knowing that there might be a difference.
I also sent it out "ceritified" but not return receipt requested. The postoffice said I could go back and ask for a copy of the signature at a later date.
Can they not answer this because I asked for the wrong thing?
After some on-line detective work I figured out that this is a collections lawyer that sent the letter and just curious to see if they will answer me.
Don't they have like 5 days to give me the total amount and original creditor and all? It has been two weeks since they signed for the letter I sent.
I hope I didn't mess this up by asking for the wrong thing?
