Why Chat writes,

"Sherman may have purchased the "account" from Sears, although I doubt it, they probably just accessed it from the public records. They have NO rights to collect a ¢ on the judgment UNLESS they have a filed assignment at the Court, which is HIGHLY unlikely."

It seems, at the very least, that some kind of purchase or transfer legitimately occurred because Sears is now reporting the account as "sold or transferred."

I also received a letter from Sears' lawyer that he was now representing the account for ShermanAcq. The account number is still the same as well.

I do not know if ShermanAcq has actually entered it in the public record, but it appears they at least have the right to do so. If so, they can also report the account as settled.

So far, then, everything appears to be legitimate.

Yes, if I wait a year it will self-resolve. Your point that judgments are not renewable in NC is a very valuable piece of knoweldge I did not already have. You are providing a real service here. But, I am also considering a real estate purchase for this year. I prefer there be no legal judgment pending, or lien potential, before I enter a real estate transaction.

If I can settle the judgment now, I do not have to wait to purchase real estate. But if they won't settle a low price, then I may simply wait for the judgment to expire.

And so, I am hoping they will come down to my price if they know they are faced with a cease and desist letter.
