It can happen because if they sue and get a judgement, AND YOUR PROPERTY IS NOT EXEMPT, they can put a lien on it.
All states have exemptions, and depending on your state, you a specified amount of equity in the home is exempt from judgement or bankrupcy. If you live in a tenants by the entirety state, and the debt is individual, and your property is in both your name and your spouse's name, your property is exempt. What state are you in? I will post your bk exemptions (which also apply to judgements)
