When an unsecured creditor sues and wins a judgment, they CAN place a judcial lien on your propery. The exemptions really have nothing to do with that, except in states where state law specifically prevents it, like TX and PA.

How do they do it ? They file the lien with the court and it is then PERFECTED, ie. attached to your property as part of the court property records. Once its attached to your property, it sits there until you try to sell the home and must pay it off before you can sell it. Even bankruptcy may not remove a perfected lien from your property.
