Going into how to sue people exactly is a bit much for here, and it took me 3 years of law school and 6 years of practice and I'm still learning. www.nolo.com might be of help. But I can tell you at least, you can sue them in federal or state court where you were when they violated the law.

Sorry for the shameless legal promo here, but I suggest you find counsel. I can't directly help you since you're in NY and I'm in NC but you should be able to find a consumer lawyer up there that will take it contingent. FDCPA makes the bad guys pay your lawyer if you win, and lawyers can keep the other side from pulling the shenanigans they love to try against DIY litigants. Also a lawyer can tell you how much of a case, if any, you have. There's no reason not to at least try to find a lawyer, but there are resources to help you if you insist on going it alone. I have a new website and if it has posted by now, I put up the complete text of FDCPA in one place for the world to read, which is where you start to see if their actions were really illegal.
