Went through something similiar, even got some paperwork from the CC company. If I close a card that is fully paid off they will reopen the account if I use the card again. There might be a time limit but I was shocked to think that some recurring transaction like a subscription renewal or something automated would reopen a credit card I dont want active anymore.
