Can they reposses my car?

This is a sticky situation. A few months ago I tried to pay off my car and sent two seperate checks.
The first one was a certified check and they got it. I sent the second check which was the balance; however, and emergeny arose and I called the car company and told them to please put a note on my account that I was going to stop payment on the second check and do not send the title. I asked the person I was talking to not to send the title and to make a note on my account twice.
Well of course they sent the title. Here's where the story gets even more sticky. My wife and I have split up and she took the title when it came and now she has the title but I have the car.
well the car co. called and told me to either send the check back with paymentof the balance or send the title back.
I coudn't do either. So they went ahead and refinanced the balance at a hefty interest rate. Now I have fallen behind and they are calling asking about their payments. Someone told me that because they don't have the title I could negotiate with them and arrange a payoff. But I'm under the impression that they could still reposses my car. I want to pay them the money that I owe them but right now I am unable to. Anyone with some suggestions?
Well I am going to try and make this very short we filed bankruptcy a few months ago chapter 7 because of huge credit card debts. I am having a difficult time at the moment and
