received a sumons today, what do we do?

we received a summons today for a medical bill that we do owe. It says we must respond to the complaint in writing. Is that to the plaintiff or to the court. We don't want to go to court and can pay half now and the other half in two weeks. We don't want there to be any sort of judgement issued. What is the best way to go about this? any advise would be greatly appreciated!
