If you ignore the summons, you will probably lose your day in court, any chance of appeal to the case, and they will get a default judgment. The default judgment will go on your credit report and last for seven years from the date that it is entered. It will be enforceable for as long as your state allows it to be so and it can be renewed. In other words, avoid a judgment at all costs.

Always answer a summons and the burden of proof is on them to prove that the debt exists and is valid.
