Time to Validate

I had a large debt written off by BOA. It went to Creditors Interchange late December '03. I asked for validation in late January. THe account moved to Alegis, who also told me they are working to validate. How long can this process take? Looking over this board, it seems that many are being sued lately. I'm kinda scared, since my $11.5k debt has grown to $14k! I live in Michigan right now, but will be moving in the next year to either Nevada or Oregon. Which is friendlier to the consumer?
