Trying to Avoid a Potential Lawsuit

Hi all,

I have a credit card that was charged off and sent to a collection agency last Spring. Not knowing any better at that time, I agreed to make monthly installment payments with the CA that I really couldn't afford. After five months, they wanted to increase my payments and threatend to sue me if I didn't comply. I sent them a Cease & Desist letter, stating that I will deal only with my original creditor. Since then I've been sending payments to my original creditor who has neither acknowledged or refused my checks (although my checks were cashed every month for the past nine months). A week ago, I was sent a letter by a law office saying that they're left with no alternative but to institute a lawsuit as instructed by their client. I can't afford to pay the balance (about $2,000) in full, but I can (and have been) making monthly payments. Help! What's the best way to resolve this without being sued or being forced to pay what I cannot?

Much thanks!
