Updating

Has anyone ever had an OC keep "updating" a charged off account - after it's been sold to a debt collector? I just pulled a credit report, the original charge off was $700 +change in 6/01 and now it's up to like $3,000 - it was "updated" a couple of times with dates after the charge off. I go back to my question from a couple of days ago - can both the OC and the debt collector both remain on the CR and keep changing the numbers whenever they please?
