Questions re:summons/appearance/answer

We received a summons for a medical bill, the SOL is currentand we live in WA state. And it is a CA filing the suit.
1st question- We have 20 days to respond, is that from the day we were served or filed in court?
After we file the appearance and answer, can we try to settle with the CA so that we dont have to go to court?
What do you recommend we do so that there is no default judgement?
