Since you have filed an appearance and answer, they *can't* get a default judgment against you unless you don't show up for court.

Generally, your 20 days start from the time of service. Check to see if your summons gave you a court date, or a return date. Your return date is the date by which you must file the appearance and obtain the actual court date from the clerk. If so, your 20 days should start from the date you file the appearance.
