CC and my dad can't pay

my dad is now 100% disabled and has tried paying on a Providian CC each month faithfully.But he cannot continue doing w/out essentials;such as his medication and food just to pay the interest on a 5000.00 bill.I had him call them to say he can no longer pay.The lady(hmmmm?) told him he had some sort of insurance he's been paying(and he didn't know) and if he had notified them within 6 months of becoming disabled it would have covered the amount owed-but not now since it's been a few years that he's been ill.I told him-screw em-stop taking almost 200.00 a month and sending to them when clearly this CC will never be paid off. he's freaking about it though.Told him I would ask the advice of you guys here as you've helped me in the past.Wouldn't you guys also think he should stop having his SS disability check done as a Direct Deposit? Or can his SS check be attached in other ways? Clearly we need advice.
