1985 Citibank CC Account is Haunting Me

Recently, I have received demand letters from a CA that stated they have purchased a Citibank debt that I owe P&I of $11,000+, but they would be willing to take just the principal of $4,500. I don't remember this debt and when I asked them what the date of the debt was, they informed me that the last activity was in 1985. During this period I was going through a tough divorce and was out of work. I advised them I had no knowledge of the debt and a debt this old would far exceed any SOL. They responded with a bunch of federal and state statutes they said allowed them to collect the principal. Are they SOL?
