Instead of completely closing your existing account, leave a small balance and have it "flagged" to prevent unauthorized electronic deductions.

Also, if you are going to stay at the same bank, MAKE SURE there will be NO "crossover" between the accounts and put a "flag" on your new account to prevent UNAUTHORIZED electronic transfers.
