It sounds like you are talking about being listed on ChexSystems, which is sort of like a credit bureau for bank accounts. If the account at this bank is still open, do NOT close it. It will be a serious hassle to find another bank that will open an account for you if you have a ChexSystems listing (which lasts for five years.) If you absolutely need a new account, try looking in this site's "Credit Directory" section for a list of possible non-Chexsystems banks. If the old bank is willing to write you a letter stating you paid up, take it - it is better than nothing. Also, go to the "Credit Overview" --> "Credit Bureaus" section, for an article about ChexSystems and its parent, Deluxe Corporation. Request a copy of your report, and make sure that it shows that the overdraft amount was paid off. You might also consider disputing the report, if you feel that anything is not accurate. <---- The links are over there. Try to avoid giving post-dated checks in the future. Not only can you run into unexpected shortages like this, but there is also a possibility of the check being cashed/deposited before the date on it.
