The collection accounts listed on your credit report
may actually be charge-offs. Look to see if any
of the charge-off amounts match any of the collection
account amounts. If so, then you may want to write
to the credit bureau's dispute address (which should
be somwhere on the report), and point out the
duplicates, and that it suggests that you owe more
than you really do. Ask them to combine any
duplicates.

If the collection accounts are for debts that became
delinquent fairly recently, then they might not
be charged off yet, but will be fairly soon.

*Don't* be desperate. That is exactly what
collection agencies want. How much you should
worry about the charge-offs will tend to depend upon
how old they are, and for how much.

Check out the "Credit Overview" section on this site
for an article explaining charge-offs.
