: It sounds like you are talking about being listed on ChexSystems, which is sort of like a credit bureau for bank accounts.

: If the account at this bank is still open, do NOT close it. It will be a serious hassle to find another bank that will open an account for you if you have a ChexSystems listing (which lasts for five years.) If you absolutely need a new account, try looking in this site's "Credit Directory" section for a list of possible non-Chexsystems banks. If the old bank is willing to write you a letter stating you paid up, take it - it is better than nothing.

: Also, go to the "Credit Overview" --> "Credit Bureaus" section, for an article about ChexSystems and its parent, Deluxe Corporation. Request a copy of your report, and make sure that it shows that the overdraft amount was paid off. You might also consider disputing the report, if you feel that anything is not accurate.

: <---- The links are over there.

: Try to avoid giving post-dated checks in the future. Not only can you run into unexpected shortages like this, but there is also a possibility of the check being cashed/deposited before the date on it.

Well I ended up closing the account because I was moving and that would have been a big hassle to keep the account open. And yes it has cause problems for me trying to open up a bank account now. I have learned my lesson with post dated checks. I did a little research on this situation and I found two letters that TCF had writen me. I received these letters while I was on Christmas break from school. So I had no knowlegde of these letter until it was too late.

The first letter (dated Dec 22, 1999) states that my account was overdrawn 233.27....In order to keep a favorable banking relationship with TCF, it is important that you pay the overdraft amount by Jan 1, 2000. Your failure to do so will require Us to close your account. Then the letter goes on to state that if the account is closed by them, one or more actions will be taken against me (1. They will will report me to the credit bureau 2. I will be sued if I do not pay the amount 3. Reported to chexsystem.)

The second letter states: My account have been overdrawn since Dec 7, 1999. So your account will be closed. Your indebtedness is currently being evaluated for possible legal action which may include placement with a collection agency or submission to the credit bureau or registering your name with chexsystem (which will be on your file for five years indication that your account was closed due to unsatisfactory performance or any combination of these. IN ORDER TO AVOID these additional actions, you must make a deposit of 233.27 no later than Jan 12, 2000.

I have my receipt that I paid the amount that was due on Jan 12, 2000 as proof. And since they told me that to avoid the actions that would be taken against me, why did I still end up in Chexsystem.

What do you think?
It was not my fault
