About 2 weeks ago I applied for a loan and found out that Gulf State had a delinquent debt on my credit card. The original lender was First USA. It turns out this account was actually an account my husband opened the same year we married and to which he later added me as an AUTHORIZED USER only. This means I was not responsible for the account. At the time my husband's credit was good so he thought he would help me build my credit since I didn't have any by adding my name to this account. Later he ran into financial difficulties and henceforth the delinquent debt.He is still working to pay this. In the meantime I tried to get First USA to give me information about this account but they said they couldn't because I WASN'T THE BORROWER! They wouldn't even contact Gulf State and ask them to remove this from my report since they had evidence that I wasn't the borrower. Finally, after umpteen days and several calls from my husband to First USA they sent a letter to my lender confirming I was not liable for this account. However, this still isn't good enough for the credit bureau since Gulf State is the one who turned this in on my report using eroneous information that they claim they received from First USA. Seven days straight I corresponded with Gulf State trying to get them to remove this from my account. All to no avail. Not only would they refuse to do this they would pass me from person to person, behave rudely and arrogantly and when I asked for someone in management they couldn't direct me there. Finally, yesterday, thanks to a posting by ZAK I was able to call Richard Munroe who is a VP with Gulf State/OSI Portfolio Services. Once I explained to him that I had already written The Federal Trade Commission and the Credit Bureau for an investigation he was quick to aid me in generating the correspondence necessary to remove this from my report. In my 10+ years experience in the corporate world I have yet to see a company behave as poorly as Gulf State Credit. Correspondence and documentation is extremelty important in dealing with these people. Exercise all your rights and inform the Federal Trade Commission of deviant business behavior. It is a war worth fighting when you consider the costs to you and those you care about. Regards!
