HELP!! lawsuit commenced against me for a CDN$700 debt????

I owed CDN$700+ to MasterCard and now lawsuit has commenced against me and they are waiting for the court to set a date! Are they bluffing or could this be real?? For less than US$500?? I thought it would take more than a grand before they will start a lawsuit? What should I do?????
