After reading the article that I pointed out, if they call again, tell them that you have read the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, and that you know your rights. That should hopefully get their attention.

Like I said before, find out if they are the original creditor's collection department, or if they are a third-party collection agency. If they are an outside agency, and if you don't want to receive any more demand calls, just tell them to stop, citing the FDCPA. Also get a snail-mail address, and send them a letter stating this.

If you receive a Summons and Complaint - official court paperwork notifying you of that a lawsuit has been filed, the best thing to do is see an attorney. If it is a clear case where you really owe the money, there might not be much you can do.
