I think that, according to either the FCRA or FDCPA, the debt can remain on your credit report for 7 years. That date is calculated from the date of the last activity plus 6 months. In the case of the SOL, it is either calculated from the date of default (12/96) or the date of default plus 6 months (6/01), (it's somewhat confusing in how it is written) but either way, I'd say you are in good shape. Anyway, NCO probably bought this debt very cheap because of the default date. I would just tell them they are SOL since you are past the SOL and let them do the research! It doesn't mean they will stop coming after you since there is nothing to stop that but chances are their efforts will be significantly reduced. I had a similar circumstance and I advised them it was past the SOL (although it was in the same gray area as yours). I have not heard from them since and now, either way, it is too late. Good Luck.
